Bruno Fernandes has paid tribute to Manchester United legends Paul Scholes and Cristiano Ronaldo after a stellar start at Old Trafford.
The attacking midfielder is one of the first names on the Red Devils team sheet after being a regular scorer in his first 10 months at Old Trafford following his £ 67m from Sporting Lisbon in January.
The 26-year-old claims his own scoring exploits remind him of United legend Paul Scholes, who also wore the number 18 jersey of the Premier League giants during his playing days.
Fernandes told the United Podcast: ‘For me, maybe I’m closer to Paul Scholes. (He) was a guy who likes to be in the area, who likes to give an assist, who likes to score a lot of goals.
“I think Scholes was one of the best midfielders in the world. For England, a lot of people talk about Frank Lampard because he scored a lot of goals, of course one of the best in England too, you also have Steven Gerrard.
But I think Scholes is the one who makes the difference more than anyone. In the last generation, those three were the best three, and for me Scholes was the best. ‘
Since moving from Portugal to Manchester, Fernandes has scored 18 goals in 33 games for the Red Devils, including six goals in eleven games this campaign.
The midfielder is the latest in a long line of Portuguese stars to have played for Manchester’s red half, the most famous of which is current Juventus and Portugal striker Cristiano Ronaldo.
During his six-year stay at Manchester United, Ronaldo scored 118 goals in 292 games, including 42 successful goals in the 2007-08 season when United won the Premier League and Champions League titles.
Fernandes, who now plays with Ronaldo in the Portuguese national team, says he has tried to copy the forward’s mentality throughout his career.
The midfielder added: ‘Everyone knows that Cristiano was my favorite player. I think it was a bit of everything.
‘It was the way he worked every day, the mentality he had, the ability he had to give 100 percent in every match at a high level. For me it was like a motivation, as if you always had to do better.
“He scored goals in every game, but he was still trying to improve. My mindset comes a bit from understanding what kind of player you want to be. ”
