Billy Koumetio made Liverpool history by becoming the club’s youngest player in the Champions League at 18 years and 25 days.
The 18-year-old defender came in as a replacement for Fabinho in a 1-1 draw against Danish Midtjylland on Wednesday night as the Champions League group stage came to a close.
The previous record holder was the record of Antonio Barragán (18 years and 59 days), and after reaching the Frenchman, a former left winger who now idolizes his teammate Virgil van Dijk, more than stood his ground at Liverpool four . .
It was an unforgettable moment for Koumetio, who joined Jurgen Klopp’s team from Orleans in January 2019, which has now been revealed allowed him to witness one of the club’s most memorable nights in recent history.
As Gary Lineker tweeted, the defender was actually a ball boy when the Reds did the unthinkable and produced one of the Champions League’s biggest comebacks at the expense of Barcelona in May 2019 to reach the final of the competition.
So he was on hand to witness Trent Alexander-Arnold, who captained Liverpool earlier tonight, and his moment of brilliance and quick thinking from the corner to set up Divock Origi at Anfield on that epic night.
Speaking of his memories of that night on the club’s official website, he said: ‘It was [blows cheeks]… Amazing, incredible. I could see the great, the great, in front of me. It was a great experience for me.
That drives me a lot. When I was sitting so close to the field and I saw the greats, they really inspired me.
‘I was motivated to work really hard and [in order] to go to that level. ‘
Meanwhile, central midfielder Leighton Clarkson, 19, played the full game in Denmark on Wednesday, and manager Jurgen Klopp seemed happy with the young duo’s departure.
“He (Koumetio) will learn and especially we let them have the experience without making this game too big,” Klopp said.
“It is wonderful to have your first Champions League game, but your career is about how many you have.
“Both boys are already very skilled, but they have a lot to learn and we will give them the time to do so.
‘They helped us a lot because we were able to rest other players, which is very important.
“I’m pretty sure it was a great night for both of them, I’m really thankful that they are as good as they are, that’s why we can use them, but I know there is more to come.”
