Ghana’s Okada Riders Association wonders why the ruling New Patriotic Party (PNP) never considered legalizing the activities of commercial motorcycle operators until four months before the general election.

This follows the government’s announcement that it will consult with stakeholders to see the way forward in legalizing the operations of Okada cyclists in the country.

The main opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), in its recently released manifesto, vowed to legalize Okada’s business to ensure it is safer for both cyclists and those who sponsor its services.

Speaking to Class News on Monday, September 14, 2020, when the Okada Riders Association met at the Class Media Group (CMG) facility in Labone in Accra, where Mahama had an interview at Class91’s Executive Breakfast Show (EBS). 3FM, the group described the NDC flag bearer as a messiah of all road users.

One member of the group said: “All road users, your Messiah is now JM because the disaster on the road will continue until someone in leadership makes a bold decision to take proactive measures or take pragmatic measures to reduce or stop the carnage. on the road “.

That’s exactly what JM said he would do.

“We have given time to your political colleagues or flaggers to come out and tell us what they can do.

“They prefer to stay in their comfort zone and ditch what we are doing,” he said.

He added that the majority of Okada’s passengers are graduates, who will play a vital role in ensuring that the legalization of Okada’s business is safe.

“The motorcyclists that you are seeing here, most of them are graduates, they will be in their offices, training the rest of the motorcyclists, teaching them when to avoid accidents, how to avoid accidents.

“This issue tries to save the lives of passengers and road users. The corrupt people in Ghana who have no integrity when it comes to this are still talking differently, but the big guys who have integrity are talking for regularization. “

He added that: “You [NPP] He cannot come to power for almost four years, you have three months left, even less than three months to leave the place and now you are consulting, we do not wash our face up ”.

The Transport Ministry said it will hold final consultations on the legalization of Okada’s business in October this year, after which a report will be sent to Cabinet for consideration.

“The second phase of the consultations is to engage stakeholders in the six (6) newly created regions of the Bono East, Ahafo, Western North, Savannah, North East and Oti regions.

“Other key interest groups and civil society organizations would also be consulted,” the ministry announced in a statement, adding that they include the following:

me. Center for Democratic Development (CDD)

ii. Danquah Institute,

iii. Institute of Democratic Governance (IDEG)

iv. Center for Integrated Social Development (ISODEC)

v. Policy Analysis Center (CEPA)

saw. Institute of Economic Affairs (IEA)

vii. And political parties

It read: “Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the final stage of stakeholder engagement is expected to begin in October 2020 and a report will be submitted to Cabinet for consideration.”

Prior to the press release, the sector minister, Akwasi Ofori Asiamah, had told reporters that the Akufo-Addo government has been consulting with relevant stakeholders on whether or not to legalize the use of motorcycles for commercial purposes (Okada ) from 2019 and if it is necessary to review the law, it will be done.
