The Red Devils go to Anfield as leaders, but haven’t won there in the league since 2016 and Jurgen Klopp’s team has a formidable record
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer says it would be a shock if Manchester United went to Liverpool and won on Sunday, but is confident their underdogs can cause a surprise.
United go to Anfield three points ahead of Jurgen Klopp’s side and on a great streak of form in the league, having last lost in November to Arsenal. However, despite their form and recent good record, the United manager believes it would be a shock if they walked away with all three points.
Liverpool haven’t lost in the league since April 2017 and United haven’t won there since January 2016.
“If you look at the last few seasons, I think it would be a surprise and it would be a shock,” Solskjaer said. “Our position right now is the product of all the hard work we’ve done on training ground and what the players are doing every day and we probably deserve to be where we are right now.
“I don’t think many would have thought of anything other than a surprise if we went back six weeks and beat Liverpool at Anfield. We are looking forward to the game and we hope we can cause that discomfort. “
Solskjaer will be able to bring a strong team to Merseyside, with only Brandon Williams and Phil Jones ruled out. Anthony Martial will be evaluated the day before after suffering a hamstring injury against Burnley but the United manager did not rule out the French forward.
Whichever team he chooses, Solskjaer knows that despite his team’s good form, they are prepared for a difficult test.
“I think all teams go into every game thinking they can win and we know we can beat anyone, anywhere and on any given day,” he said.
“Being able to get into a game like this feeling, if we play our best we can win is a good feeling, but we know we have to perform at our best and we don’t think about the consequences after that, just think about acting.
“It’s a reality check and test of where we really are. We’ve won many, many tight matches, scored a few goals in injury time and we’ve shown that mentality, but we haven’t really turned the world on too many times and to win at Anfield you really need to be at your best. . “
