The Inspector General of Police (IGP), James Oppong-Boanuh, was urged to remain neutral and impartial before, during and after the December 7 elections.

Private attorney and member of the Democratic National Congress (NDC) Godwin Edudzi Tameklo said the IGP’s recent stance on electoral violence does not inspire confidence that it will be fair during the elections.

His comments come after Oppong-Boanuh assured the nation that his men will work to protect lives and property before, during and after the December 7 election.

He warned people who intend to foment riots during elections that the police will treat them mercilessly if caught.

Speaking at a press conference on Wednesday November 4, 2020, he said: “62,794 security personnel from the Ghana Police Service, the Ghana Fire Service, the Ghana Prison Service, the Ghana Immigration Service, the Customs Division of the Ghana Revenue Authority and the Ghana Armed Forces are deploying for the elections.

“All the personnel that I mentioned will be in their regular uniforms with the exception of the officers of the Criminal Investigations Department of the Police Service and the National Investigations Bureau who will remain invisible,” added the IGP.

“I have already said that we have a deep commitment to prevent crime from occurring, but where it does occur, we will prosecute the offenders, we will do the investigations, we will gather the necessary evidence and we will process them successfully,” he said.

Speaking in relation to this development on TV3’s New Day hosted by Johnnie Hughes on Thursday, November 5, Mr. Edudzi Tameklo said: “His body language is different from his action. The mere fact that President Akufo-Addo has given him a contract extension does not prevent him from fulfilling his responsibilities.

“I want a guarantee from an IGP that will say that when the NDC MP did this, we are prosecuting, the NPP MP has done it and we are prosecuting.

“We saw live ammunition during the search and nothing was done about it and this same person comes back to say during the election itself that he will make sure there is peace. Who is Mr. IGP kidding?

But responding to his claim on the same program, Dennis Aboagye, a member of the Communications team of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) said that the Police must be trusted to do a good job in the elections.

He noted that the government of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has provided resources to the police service to enable them to fulfill their mandates.
