Manchester United received a boost in their search for Bayern Munich star David Alaba after the club president admitted a breakdown in contract negotiations.
The talented defender emerged as a possible signing, as he is believed to have been attacked during the summer transfer window.
United’s need for defensive reinforcement has been obvious and therefore Alaba’s quality, as well as versatility, would have been helpful.
At 28, the speedy center-back is still at the peak of his career and could have enjoyed a long time at Old Trafford.
However, the only defensive signing Ole Gunnar Solskjaer made was Alex Telles, who can play mainly on the left flank.
According to the Manchester Evening News, the club’s president, Herbert Hainer, said: “We have a new situation from this weekend. Some time ago we presented to David and his advisor what we think was a very good offer.
“During the last meeting we said that we wanted clarity by the end of October. We didn’t know anything until yesterday and contacted his advisor.
“The answer was that the offer was not satisfactory yet and we should think again.
“So we decided to take the offer completely off the table. This means that there is no longer an offer. “
Bayern and Alaba intertwining horns and bumping heads make it the perfect time for Manchester United to pounce on their signature.
However, it does not guarantee that they will get the Austrian international as there will likely be others competing.
Nor would it be surprising to see Alaba change his mind if he realizes that there is no other place as good as Bayern.
It would also not be surprising to see the German giants allow him to leave for free, as they have not been afraid to do so in the past with other players.
