Initial observations and reactions
- Salzburg regrets the first missed opportunities. Although the match was still stuck at 0-0, Salzburg had the best chances but could not capitalize on them. Salzburg could have been up 2-0 midway through the first half, and possibly should have. If they had scored just one goal, they probably would have achieved a draw, especially with Bayern with ten men.
- Bayern did not panic in the face of adversity. Although Salzburg were able to frustrate Bayern, they weathered the storm in the first half and did the job, taking the lead at the halftime break. After the red card, he had the feeling for a minute that Salzburg could maybe just a moment. However, Leroy closed the game door, scored the third goal and put the game out of reach.
- Richards and Roca impress in their first Champions League starts. Although they weren’t the stars of the show, Chris Richards and Marc Roca did a good job in silence. Richards seemed a bit nervous when pressed, but technically he was solid throughout the game. Roca made a very good change, but his two yellow cards will likely cloud the performance. Youth outings like this are critical to Bayern’s success in this condensed calendar.

Half time observations
- Salzburg could frustrate Bayern. For a time it seemed that the ball was always in Bayern’s defensive zone. Pressure from Salzburg frustrated Bayern, leading to fouls and sloppy gifts in potentially dangerous areas. Bayern are lucky to go into halftime with a goal. Which brings me to my next point:
- Neuer is still the best. Salzburg had two really good scoring chances. The first produced two shots and two acrobatic stops from Neuer. The second quality chance was a breakup and a failure in Bayern communication led Szobaoszlai to be one-on-one against Neuer. However, the shot was skipped over the bar, pointing to the mental advantage Neuer has over rivals. Neuer ends the half with five saves.
- Lewandowski is the Neuer for strikers. Robert Lewandowski scored his 77th all-time goal in the Champions League. This places him third all-time behind only Christiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi. The Polish hit man set up Mueller’s shot, which was deflected toward Lewy for the goal. It had been impressive, but calm until the goal.
Halftime: Bayern Munich 1-0 FC Salzburg
43 ‘- GOAL Bavaria !! Robert Lewandowski
24 ‘- Yellow card. Manuel Neuer for delay of game.
Kick off: We are on our way!
Chris Richards and Marc Roca begin
According to the pre-match brochure for members of the press, Richards could start as a left back, while David Alaba stays in the center back:
The Champions League is back! On this occasion, Bayern Munich face RB Salzburg at the Allianz Arena. The game comes at a really awkward time as the Bavarians are recovering from a series of injuries in midfield and defense.
Hansi Flick has a lot of work ahead of him today. While he still has his top stars like Roobert Lewandowski, Thomas Muller and Manuel Neuer at his disposal, the lack of Joshua Kimmich really hurts the team. With Alphonso Davies injured and Lucas Hernández in doubt, David Alaba may need to move to the left back for cover. This leaves a void in central defense that is difficult to fill as neither Javi Martinez nor young Chris Richards are incredible options against Dominic Szoboszlai and company. However, Hansi has yet to lose in the Champions League, he is not going to go down without a fight.
It’s Bayern time.
