Grischa Promel gave Union Berlin a lead in the sixth minute
Bundesliga leaders Bayern Munich had to come back to win a point at Union Berlin.
Union, sixth in the table, took the lead after six minutes with a header from Grischa Promel from a corner.
Robert Lewandowski equalized with his 13th goal of the season, taking advantage of Kingsley Coman’s pass.
Bayern, who have now only won once in four league games, are ahead of RB Leipzig on goal difference.
Leipzig previously defeated Werder Bremen 2-0.
Both teams can be overtaken on Sunday by Bayer Leverkusen, who face Hoffenheim.
This was the fifth consecutive league game in which defending champions Bayern have lagged behind.
They could have been more adrift had Manuel Neuer not made a superb first minute save from Taiwo Awoniyi, who then had a chance to double Union’s lead, only to shoot wide.
With home fans chanting and lighting fireworks outside the stadium, Bayern improved after the break but could not find a winner after Lewandowski tied them.
The European champions will find out who they will face in the Champions League round of 16 on Monday.
