Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has revealed that the government has installed a free wireless Internet connection popularly known as Wi-Fi in 80% of high schools across the country.
According to Bawumia, this initiative aims to help expand the reach of education, information, communication and technology (ICT), research and knowledge acquisition in SHS.
Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosiisen program on Wednesday, September 30, 2020, as reported by Joy News, the vice president revealed that the project is almost finished than estimated.
The initiative was made public by the vice president in early 2020 at a town hall meeting in Kumasi.
“We promised to provide free Wi-Fi to our high schools … At least 80% of all our upper secondary schools are now connected to free Wi-Fi, that’s the information we have,” he said.
He noted that the system is being tested before it is approved for use in October, as mentioned by Communications Minister Ursula Owusu-Ekuful.
YEN.com.gh previously reported that the Deputy Minister of Education in charge of Basic and Secondary Education, Dr. Yaw Adutwum, revealed that the Ghana Education Service (GES) was tasked with reviewing its policies on the use of mobile phones and other devices to make room by the president’s promise.
“GES [Ghana Education Service] you have been asked to review their policies and they will need to review them [the ban on smart devices]. We are in the 21st century, ”he said.
Speaking on CitiFM’s Point Blank segment on Eyewitness News, Dr. Adutwum said the concerns weren’t enough to contain the arguments against using internet-enabled devices in schools without adult supervision.
According to him, the time has come for society to embrace the positive aspects of technology in schools.
“In the 21st century, it is necessary to take advantage of technology to improve learning outcomes. It is something that has to happen and must happen ”, he pointed out.
