Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia today commissioned a free WiFi project on the new campus of the Ghana Institute of Journalism (GIJ), located in Dzorwulu, Accra, on November 20, 2020.

Headed by the Ghana Electricity Company, GIJ’s free internet access is part of the government’s plan to install a fiber network in all tertiary institutions across the country, thus connecting them to national data through a 650 fiber cable network.

By commissioning free Internet access on the GIJ campus, Mahamudu Bawumia said the initiative will boost learning among students and help expand the reach of ICT education and research.

“The government is committed to harnessing ICT technology as a cross-cutting enabler of economic growth, the delivery of innovation services, and a powerful accelerated learning tool. Speakers, teachers and students will have access to the educational information necessary to improve teaching, learning and research in our institutions throughout the country ”, revealed the vice president.

He added that the policy will also close the technology gap between underprivileged students and students in the most gifted schools, as everyone will have access to the same learning materials online.

“This free Wi-Fi is an academic opportunity leveler, a window of equal opportunity for students across the country. A student from a less endowed school will have access to the same academic material as his or her counterpart in a more endowed school, ”he stated.

Furthermore, he noted that the COVID-19 outbreak has emphasized the need to accelerate high-speed internet connectivity across all campuses for distance learning.

According to Bawumia, “When this free Wi-Fi in schools project was conceived, no one could have predicted that COVID-19 will make distance education a central part of academic work at all levels of education. As disturbing and devastating as COVID-19 is, it has supercharged the need to create free, uninterrupted Internet access on campuses. “
