All elementary schools in the Sissala East municipality have reopened, but with little respect for COVID-19 protocols.

GhanaWeb’s visits to some schools showed that compliance with COVID-19 safety measures was generally low despite public announcements informing students and parents to especially wear nasal masks when reporting back to the school.

Some of the schools visited were: Egala Basic, St. Gabriel Basic and TUTCO Demonstration Basic, as well as Grace Provider Academy in the municipal capital of Sissala East in Tumu.

The Basic schools reopened following a directive from the Ghana Education Service (GES) that all Basic Schools, both public and private, would resume on January 18, 2021.

Meanwhile, some of the main activities that took place in most of the schools visited by GhanaWeb were general cleaning exercises, including sweeping classrooms, weeding, manual collection and burning of disposal materials.

In an interview with the principal of the TUTCO demonstration basic school, Mr. Kassim File Dangor, told GhanaWeb that the number of students reported at 9:25 am was encouraging and that some students began to report to the school at 6:30 am.

Despite providing Veronica with a bucket, she regretted that the school was challenged to access portable water for students to wash their hands.

But GhanaWeb checks revealed that few of the students wore nasal masks.

In addition, a visit to Grace Provider Academy, a private elementary school, revealed that some students were wearing nasal masks.

The school had also provided two politanks with soap and water to wash hands and take the temperature of students and parents, among others.
