Phase two of the ongoing national disinfection and fumigation exercise in basic schools started in the Greater Accra region on Wednesday 23 September 2020.
The seven-day exercise, a collaboration between the Ministry of Education (MoE), the Ghana Education Service (GES) and Zoomlion Ghana Limited (ZGL) covers public and private schools.
It aims to protect schools against coronavirus disease (COVID-19), particularly as Form Two students will return to school next month to complete the academic calendar.
According to the General Manager of Zoomlion Ghana Limited, Accra Area, Mr. Ernest Morgan Acquah, his team was expected to disinfect and fumigate around 3,680 basic schools in the twenty-nine (29) Metropolitan, Municipal District Assemblies (MMDAs) in Greater Accra Region.
“As of Thursday, September 24, 2020, we had fumigated and disinfected around 530 schools,” he said.
He explained that while the disinfection is to protect the school environment from the COVID-19 pandemic, the fumigation was to kill insects and repel rodents.
He argued that it was a good thing that basic schools were undergoing another round of fumigation and disinfection exercises.
In this regard, Mr. Acquah reiterated the need for schools to have disinfection quarterly or at least once every six months.
According to him, 347 people have been deployed in addition to disinfection equipment that includes nebulizers, sprays and individual machines to assist in the exercise.
He assured that his disinfection team would complete the task by September 30, 2020.
However, the ZGL general manager for the Accra Area said that one challenge they faced over the course of the exercise was with some of the private schools that were sometimes closed, which brought work to a standstill.
In addition to disinfection, Mr. Acquah pleaded with both peers and school authorities to ensure that returning Form Two students continue to observe COVID-19 safety protocols.
Some of the basic schools that benefited from the exercise were Ron Brown Memorial Educational Center in Mamobi, Flagstaff House Basic School in the Ayawaso East City Council, Kanda International School, and Greater Care International School.
Others were African Unity JHS Anglican 1 and JHS 2 all in the Dadekotopon City Council.
The facilities fumigated and disinfected in the schools included nursery, nursery, first cycle of primary school, JHS, bathrooms, toilets, offices, among others.
Speaking to reporters, the administrator of the Ron Brown Memorial Education Center, Madame Fatima Bintu Abdul Nasir, praised GES and Zoomlion for undertaking another disinfection and fumigation exercise at their school.
“The exercise is very good and will be of great help to protect the Form Two that will resume on October 5 against the COVID-19 pandemic,” he said.
He added that the school had also implemented several COVID-19 security measures that will ensure that Form Two students comply.
At Anglican 1 JHS, the assistant principal, Mr. Eric Akuamoah, while describing the exercise as timely and crucial, appealed to Zoomlion to help his school clean up a pile of thorns on the school grounds.
He hinted that the thorns on the school grounds had become a nuisance and were not helping with academic work.
The exercise will continue until September 30.
