Exclusive – The candidate for the presidency of Barcelona, Jordi Farre, has named Manchester United’s Marcus Rashford among the forwards he “likes most in the world” when commenting on the need for the Catalan club to strengthen itself in attack.
Barcelona is currently preparing for the presidential elections, to be held in January, following the resignation of Josep Maria Bartomeu in October.
Among the highest-profile candidates is Farre, 45, who is running under the slogan ‘La Gran Remuntada’ and has made headlines for his promises that include free pizzas and tattoos for club members, as well as the return of Neymar.
It has been a difficult year for Barcelona, which amid the turmoil off the field of a financial crisis and Lionel Messi’s transfer request, have struggled in La Liga, which currently ranks fifth in table eight points behind leader Atlético de Madrid.
Managing the renewal of the workforce at the time of the pandemic and its economic implications has been a common topic of conversation for the presidents of Barcelona.
Talking to 90min.esFarre outlined the areas of the team that he thinks need to be strengthened.
“I thought that Barça needed a central but if we look at how [Ronald] Araujo and [Oscar] Mingueza are playing, they have even displaced [Clement] Lenglet, “Farre said.
“In the end, if Araujo, Mingueza, [Gerard] Piqué and Lenglet are available to play, so the central position would be more or less full.
“But I also said that we need a striker, I think we need a scorer and I think [Martin] Braithwaite needs a replacement or a better starter, right?
“I think Braithwaite can be a very good option, but he should be the fifth or sixth player in the Barça forward.”
Farre then went on to list three forwards he likes and presumably would like to see signed up in addition to Neymar.
He continued: “Look, there is one that I have liked for a long time and yesterday he scored a great goal. I have not seen him but they have told me that it is spectacular that it is Raúl de Tomás”. [of Espanyol].
“I think he is a player who has many things to succeed – he has some injury problems and stuff – but I also like [Erling] Haaland, Raul de Tomas, Rashford, I like it too. I think there are very interesting players. “
And he added: “Rashford is one of the footballers that I like the most in the world.”
The 23-year-old Rashford is currently under contract until 2023 at Old Trafford, while United maintains the option to extend his contract for another year.
The English international, who was honored with a special Sports Personality of the Year award for his campaign against child poverty in the UK, has scored 12 goals in 21 games this season so far.
Reports earlier this year claimed that Rashford tentatively agreed to move to Barcelona in 2018, but ultimately withdrew from the deal to remain at United.
