Barcelona have reached an agreement in principle with their players to introduce pay cuts that will save the club 122 million euros (110 million pounds).

Captain Lionel Messi and his teammates will see their salaries reduced to ease the financial burden on the La Liga club amid the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

Along with the important initial savings, Barça has deferred 50 million euros in variable payments over a period of three years.

“This principle of agreement is pending ratification in the coming days by the group of players and coaches affected,” read a statement from the club.

“The agreement, if ratified, will be a milestone of great importance in reorienting the current economic situation.

“Both parties recognize the great effort that has had to be made to reach this principle of agreement and congratulate themselves for it.”
