The young Canarian once again made Leo Messi smile, the Barcelona captain playing his best game of the season with one hand on all three goals.
Ronald Koeman changed his formation at José Zorrilla, lining up three center-backs and deploying wings in the 3-0 victory over Valladolid. Sergio Busquets, Antoine Griezmann and Philippe Coutinho were consigned to the bench when Leo Messi and Pedri shone in what was arguably Barcelona’s best performance under Ronald Koeman.
This is how the Barça players did at José Zorrilla.
Ter Stegen. A solid performance from the German stopper who made a good save with one hand to deny Orellana. It is a guarantee for Barça under the posts but he still has fire problems when he leaves his comfort zone in the six meter area.
Mingueza. He was not wrong. A three-center defense system also excels when all its components are protected. The young man was a picture of concentration and he kept his end of the bargain.
Araújo. At the same level as Mingueza, he played his role and was rarely under pressure. It wasn’t necessary to get the ball out, a task that fell to Pjanic in Koeman’s new system.
Lenglet. On the score sheet and has improved considerably in terms of reading air balls in defense and attack. A good header to open the scoring and a pleasant evening at the other end.
Dest. In its element as a rear wing and has the engine to keep going up and down the flank. He made several dangerous forays from his side of the field and his energy levels are a blessing for Barcelona.
Pjanic. Another start and a good game from the midfielder, who gives Barça much more rhythm than Busquets. He comes with a risk factor as he loses more balls than the Spain midfielder, but he is dynamic and seems to have built a good rapport with De Jong.
De Jong. The Dutchman is in a rich vein of form. His role has simply been distilled to set the pace for Barça and add some verve in the midfield and he has taken on more responsibilities on his shoulders. When you put your foot on the pedal, the rest of the team does the same.
Sunrise. At the moment, like Dest, it is best deployed as a wing rather than a full wing because where it falls a bit lacking is tracking.
Pedri. A man from the performance of the game and one that Luis Enrique can see again. Pedri has established himself in Barça’s starting eleven with incredible confidence and it is wonderful to see him with the ball. His heel strike for Messi’s goal was a pleasure to behold, but his tactical awareness is just as impressive. He is always where his teammates want him to be.
Messi. The best game of the Argentine season. A goal, an assist and a hand on all three strikes, could have added more to his own account had it not been for Masip’s skill. The link between him and Pedri is something that the Barça fans are very excited about
Braithwaite. He did well to read the play to score the second for Barça and was about to score a cheeky high-heeled goal that shows he’s growing in confidence. His connection to Dest is paying off and his work pace and ability to draw in defenders to provide space for his teammates plays a vital role.
