The Uruguayan leaves the Camp Nou after six seasons in which he scored 198 goals in 283 games for the club
Barcelona confirmed that Luis Suárez joined Atlético de Madrid after the two Spanish teams reached an agreement for the Uruguayan star.
Atleti will pay Barça 6 million euros (5.5 million pounds sterling / 7 million dollars) to acquire the forward, who is leaving the Camp Nou after six seasons at the club.
Suárez had been strongly linked with Juventus in recent weeks as the Italian champions were looking for a forward, but the Bianconeri moved on to other goals after Suárez was forced to go through a lengthy process to acquire Italian citizenship.
Instead, he will head to Atleti after a stint at Barça that saw him claim 13 trophies and become the club’s third all-time top scorer, second only to César and Leo Messi.
“FC Barcelona and Atlético de Madrid have reached an agreement for the transfer of the player Luis Suárez. The Madrid club will pay FC Barcelona 6 million euros in variables,” the Catalan club announced.
“FC Barcelona wants to publicly express its gratitude to Luis Suárez for his commitment and dedication and wishes him all the best for the future.”

Suárez originally moved to Barcelona in 2014, having emerged as a superstar during his time with Liverpool.
He then scored 198 goals in 283 games for the Blaugrana, winning the Golden Boot as Europe’s top scorer after scoring 59 goals in total in 2015-16.
While at Barça, Suárez won four La Liga titles and a Champions League, as he scored against Juventus to secure that European title for Barça.
He will now join Diego Simeone’s Atlético, which will give the club an option at the top following the departure of Álvaro Morata, who recently joined Juventus with an initial 12-month loan agreement with a purchase option for € 45 million (£ 40 million / $ 52 million).
Suárez scored 21 goals in 36 games for Barça last season while battling an injury midway through the Barça campaign in what turned out to be his least prolific season at Camp Nou.
After arriving in August, new Barcelona coach Ronald Koeman told Suárez that he would not be in his plans for next season, sealing the 33-year-old’s fate at Camp Nou.
Now with Atlético, Suárez could be ready in time for this weekend’s game against Granada with the club that will visit Huesca next Wednesday.
