Barcelona’s attacking duo, Lionel Messi and Antoine Griezmann, have come under harsh criticism from Marco van Basten, who says they are currently “playing without purpose.”

Despite being two world-class talents, Messi and Griezmann have yet to really come together on the field since the latter joined the club in a £ 107 million deal from Atlético Madrid in July 2019.

The pair were out of tune again on Saturday when Barcelona lost 1-0 to rival Atlético in LaLiga to the ire of Van Basten.

The legendary striker, who won 20 major awards during his career, including three European Cups with AC Milan, also said his recent exhibits are more like a bakery than playing football.

“They’re just playing bad now,” Van Basten told Ziggo Sport.

‘[Lionel] Messi and [Antoine] Griezmann is playing like two purposeless people, like a bunch of bakers.

Van Basten used the Dutch ‘Stelletje koekenbakkers’, which translates as a ‘group of bakers’. And in this sense it refers to people who do a job without any notion of what they are doing or in a sloppy or clumsy way.

Digging deeper into Messi’s recent performances, Van Basten believes there are multiple factors affecting him right now in addition to his future.

“It will certainly bother him that there is no crowd,” added the Dutchman.

Also, he hasn’t trained much in recent months; has done little work. He is not happy with the situation in and around Barcelona.

And then there is that mess with Griezmann. It is an accumulation. We don’t know him like that at all.
