Barcelona striker Ansu Fati underwent meniscus tear surgery that is expected to keep the 18-year-old prodigy out of action for four months.

The league’s teenage top scorer by the Spanish giants was substituted at halftime after showing obvious pain during the first half of Barça’s 5-2 win against Real Betis at Camp Nou on Saturday.

Asking fans wishing the Spanish sensation a speedy recovery, a club statement said: “Ansu Fati has successfully undergone surgery for an internal mensicus injury in his left knee.

“The operation was performed by Dr. Ramon Cugat under the supervision of the Club’s medical services.”

Fati, who began his first full season as a senior player, scored two goals in five minutes in the first half of Barça’s first game of the season by beating Villarreal 4-0 at the Camp Nou.

Fati has scored five times and added two assists so far, starting while all-time top scorer Lionel Messi started off the bench against Betis after taking a hit.

Messi scored twice after coming in and teammate Antoine Griezmann also scored in the second half despite missing a penalty.

The recovery of the debutant Fati will also exclude him from the next matches of Spain against Switzerland, the Netherlands and Germany.

Real Madrid’s Marco Asensio has replaced him on the national team, with whom he became the youngest player to score for Spain thanks to a goal against Ukraine last month.

Barcelona face two tough games without Fati after the international break, beginning with a trip to undefeated Atlético de Madrid on November 21.

They can then almost seal qualification for the Champions League round of 16 with a win at Dynamo Kiev, although the Ukrainian side gave them a scare when Barça finally won 2-1 in the reverse match last week.
