The Catalan giants confirmed an agreement with players and squad already ratified to help the club save money during the coronavirus pandemic

Barcelona has officially announced that the club has ratified an agreement on the reduction of salaries for players and staff, as well as confirming the calendar for the next presidential elections.

objective understands that the pay cut will come in the form of a deferred payment of € 122 million (£ 110 million / US $ 146 million). Barça hoped to save up to 190 million euros (170 million pounds sterling / 227 million dollars) after significant revenue losses from the coronavirus pandemic.

“The management committee wants to publicly thank the footballers, coaches and employees for their understanding, their commitment and their help to the organization to make possible this fundamental agreement to ensure the immediate sustainability of the club,” said a statement from the club.

“The managing committee believes that this is a great step on the road to face the extraordinary circumstances in which the organization finds itself due to the global pandemic that has affected everyone since March of this year.”

Meanwhile, the Barcelona presidential election will take place on January 24.

The date means that the new president will only have one week to act before the January transfer window ends. Lionel Messi, however, is free to negotiate with the clubs as of January 1, and his contract expires in the summer.

The incumbent Josep Maria Bartomeu and the board of directors resigned in October, a few days before the scheduled vote of no confidence.

Former President Joan Laporta announced on Monday that he will run as a candidate, describing his attempt to return to office as “the great challenge of my life.

The other candidates expected to be presented are Jordi Farre, Toni Freixa, Lluis Fernandez Ala, Agusti Benedito, Pere Riera and Víctor Font, considered the favorite.

Former Vice President Emili Rousaud, former Director Xavi Vilajoana and former Girona President Jordi Roche are also said to be considering running.

Barça confirmed this Monday that the electoral campaign will take place from January 15 to 22 before the election day takes place two days later.

According to an agreement with the Generalitat de Catalunya, the polling stations will be located in Tarragona, Tortosa, Lleida, Girona, Andorra, Madrid, Seville and Palma, for those who cannot vote at the Camp Nou offices.

The election is typically held only at the Camp Nou, but changes have been made to help comply with coronavirus protocols.
