The finer details of the FIFA The Best awards are often an interesting read, and it is sometimes possible to tell a lot about in-game relationships depending on where an individual’s votes go.
That’s certainly the case with the Best Coach voting, and players not only vote for who they think is the best coach, but also for those who have treated them well.
Gareth Bale’s votes this year make for interesting reading, with the Welsh captain overlooking Real Madrid manager Zinedine Zidane. Bale opted for Hansi Flick as his first vote, against Jurgen Klopp in second and Julen Lopetegui in third.
Luka Modric, Sergio Ramos and Eden Hazard, all appreciated Zidane’s contribution a little more.
Both Hazard and Ramos had the Frenchman in first place, while Modric placed Zidane in second, behind Flick.
Ramos, like Bale, winked at a former coach when he named Lopetegui as his third best coach of the year.
Lopetegui himself, for his part, voted for Cristiano Ronaldo, Robert Lewandowski and Lionel Messi as his three best players.
Lewandowski, unsurprisingly, voted for the Bayern Munich manager Flick as their best coach of 2020.
