Ghana’s youth national teams, Black Maidens (Women’s Under-17) and Black Princesses (Women’s Under-20) have crucial qualifiers for the 2021 FIFA World Cup in October and November this year. The Maidens have a difficult test against rivals Nigeria with the Princesses set to face Guinea Bissau on a date yet to be decided in November.

Our head coaches Baba Nuhu (Maidens) and Yussif Basigi (Princesses) have been talking about team building, strategy, friendly matches and more.

This is what they told the Communications team:

In Maidens five months camping

It is one of the test matches that we have lined up so far to see how the girls are doing. We have been in camp for the past five weeks and gradually put them through a lot. What I was looking for in this game is how to take out our opponent when they come attacking, because all this week, we have been looking for the best way to play for our team strategy. My mind is not on the scoreboard line, but they played very well in the first half and in the second half I also have to place other players so that, in the absence of one or two players, I know how they can do it. I think I’m basically satisfied after spending five weeks at camp with this performance.

On opponents, Nigeria

It is very important that we at least have an idea of our opponent but for now we do not have any information about him so we continue with our preparation. We play at home first, so that’s our game strategy. They should be watching us to see how they can counter us. Although it is good for us to have information about them, we do not. I think we are preparing for them and everything will be fine.

Players’ mood before the game

When people talk about my girls getting freaked out, I laugh because this isn’t Black Stars vs. Green Eagles. Remember these are female sides, under 17. Ghana has always been a difficult customer for this age group and I think they will be more afraid of us than we are because we have always qualified for the tournament and excelled.

On the strength of the team and what Nigeria brings to the table

If you look at our record of beating Liberia 10-0 and Nigeria’s 10-1, I think we are ahead of them, I should say so. There has never been anything like being afraid of Nigeria. We are Ghana, they are Nigeria and we are two strong teams in Africa, so we continue our preparations and when match day comes, people will see what we are made of.

Meanwhile, princess coach Yussif Basigi is also working on his squad for the 2021 FIFA U-20 women’s qualifiers. They first have to face Guinea Bissau on a date yet to be determined.

Basigi in five weeks of camp and training games.

The five-week camp has not been in vain. We have worked on our players from both Maidens and Princesses and we are seeing glimpses of everything we have been teaching them, we just still have a touch or two left to do but overall it has been very impressive for both teams.

On the condition of the equipment and physical development

I think the players are well conditioned, my players and the Maidens have played several friendly games. They are well conditioned and seem very hungry no matter the crunchy tackles and physicality in the games, they were on their feet. I am very impressed with his conditioning and tactical play.

The date of the first match has not yet come out

In fact, we are still waiting for them. We are weighing our training regiment so as not to overload the players to get into the red zone. Sometimes we are a bit considerate when it comes to loading the players but the Maidens already have the date for their game, so since our date has not yet arrived, we are a bit cautious not to give them too much load. that’s why you can tell there is a bit of fatigue in them. We do not need to load them so much and they reach the red zone, by then the date will arrive and they will find us missing. That is why we have been considerate in terms of loading and pressuring players.
