‘Aviation This Week’ seeks to provide an overview of events relevant to Ghana’s aviation industry by considering the relevant activities of 9th up to 14th November 2020. Below are some of the top seven stories from the week under review:

  1. Ethiopian Airlines Named ‘Customer Choice Airline of the Year’

In the first edition of the National Customer Choice Awards, Ghana, which seeks to recognize outstanding companies through the lens of customers, Ethiopian Airlines was selected as the best airline in terms of customer service. The airline selection that arose out of stiff competition from other international airlines was driven by customer appreciation for Ethiopian’s onboard and ground services, as well as the airline’s contribution in the evacuation of Ghanaians and distribution of COVID. -19 related materials at the peak of the pandemic. Upon receiving the award, Yemesrach Alemayehu, the airline’s Area Manager, said the award will encourage them to do more to improve their services.

  • AFRAA calls for prioritizing the challenges of African airlines
  • The African Airlines Association celebrated its 52North Dakota Meeting of the Annual General Assembly on November 9 and 10, 2020. At the virtual meeting, the Association’s Secretary General, Abderahmane Berthé, called for the operational challenges faced by African airlines to be prioritized and addressed. AFRAA also encouraged airlines to build resilience and emerge stronger after the COVID-19 pandemic.

    The Assembly brought together the main CEOs of African airlines, industrial partners and leaders of international and regional air transport associations from around the world.

  • Ghana threatens to negotiate with airlines that defy COVID-19 protocols
  • Ghana’s President Nana Akufo-Addo in his 19th The coronavirus update speech to the nation indicated that the authorities will not hesitate to sanction airlines that fail to comply with the directive to conduct a polymerized chain reaction (PCR) test for passengers at the airport. This was released after a total of 172 people were reported to have tested positive for the virus so far at Kotoka International Airport since its reopening on September 1, 2020.

  • Emirates unveils Airbus A380 in cargo operations
  • Emirates SkyCargo has started to use its Airbus A380 in selected charter operations in its operational network. The airline has optimized the cargo carrier to safely transport about 50 tons of cargo without operational problems. The first A380 cargo operation went from Seoul to Amsterdam via the airline hub, Dubai.

  • Kumasi International Airport nears completion
  • In the nation building updates on Tuesday, November 10, 2020, in Accra, Ashanti Regional Minister Simon Osei-Mensah indicated that the Kumasi airport will be upgraded to international airport status by the second quarter of 2021.

    The project, which is an expansion of the current state of the airport, will see the construction of a world-class terminal, platforms and the extension of the runway from 1981m to 2300m to accommodate large aircraft.

  • US $ 110 billion lost in revenue by Top Airlines
  • Data made available by StockApps.com suggests that following the coronavirus pandemic, Delta Airlines, Lufthansa, American Airlines, International Airlines Group (British Airways administrators), United and Air France lost $ 110 billion in revenue since the beginning of 2020.   • Charles Hanson Adu Named Vice Chairman of the Global Security and Technical Standing Committee
  • A statement from Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL) this week confirmed that “The Global Executive Committee of the Airport Council International (ACI) approved the nomination and appointment of Mr. Charles Hanson Adu, Group Executive, Ghana Airports Company Limited Airport Management as vice president of the Permanent Technical and Global Security Committee (STSC) ”. He becomes the first African to be appointed to such a position.
