The first day of the two-week meeting of the Public Accounts Committee to examine the reports of the Auditor General, public boards, corporations and other statutory institutions for 2017, ended abruptly when the Committee’s deputy rank member, Mohammed Hardi Tufeiru and the President, James Klutse Avedzi, exchanged heated exchanges.

The crash had to do with the direct payment of sponsorship and request for support in the amount of GHS5 million to Okyenhene, Rebecca Foundation, Economic and Organized Crime Office (EOCO) and some others.

Ningo-Prampram MP, Mr. Sam Nartey George, sought an explanation as to why the money was not sent through the GNPC Foundation.

Board Secretary Matilda Ohene, who was present, however, had trouble answering that question, resulting in a follow-up from Mr. Avedzi Klutse.

This, however, was met with disdain by the deputy ranking member, prompting exchanges between the two deputies, bringing the session to an abrupt end.

Below is the transcript of what happened:

Mohammed Hardi Tufeiru: You said that they would appear before this committee to respond to audit issues reported by the Auditor General and that they are unprepared on this matter that you have referred them to now … Let’s be consistent in applying the rule.

In the past, before approving someone …

Avedzi: – Will you listen to me? I am the chair of the committee. What is your problem?

Mohammed Hardi Tufeiru: Let’s apply the rules consistently. Consistency is the basic rule; let’s apply it.

Avedzi – The rules are that we allow questions of public interest.

That is the rule.

Mohammed Hardi Tufeiru: We will submit it for approval.

Avedzi: What approval? And I have passed … if I pass a public interest question …

Mohammed Hardi Tufeiru: It’s not fair

Avedzi: I have no responsibility to call you a senior committee member to tell you that I have approved this public interest question.

I do not.

I am the committee chair
