Atlético de Madrid will almost certainly finish 2020 at the top of the League after beating Getafe at the Wanda Metropolitano.
Luis Suárez led a winning goal in the first half to give Atlético manager Diego Simeone the victory in his 500th game for the club.
Atlético have a three-point advantage, with a game in hand, over rivals and defending champions of Real Madrid.
Simeone’s team, which is chasing its first league title since 2014, has won 301 games under his tenure.
The club parted ways with forward Diego Costa on Tuesday after the Spanish international fell out of favor at the club.
Suárez and Joao Félix have been preferred to Costa up front this season, and Simeone will feel vindicated in his decision as the former dealt the decisive blow to Getafe.
Elche play later on Wednesday and it would take a big win to dislodge Atlético at the top.
