Atlético de Madrid took on Elche at the Wanda Metropolitano this afternoon in hopes of getting their title back on track.

They did, securing a 3-1 victory. A double from Luis Suárez paired with a late penalty from Diego Costa closed the challenge for Elche, whose only response came in the form of a goal from Lucas Boye.

The Rojiblancos had started the season fiercely, but suffered a setback last weekend in their 2-0 loss to Real Madrid.

Diego Simeone’s men will be resentful of the defeat ever since and entered the clash hoping to follow a comfortable midweek Copa del Rey victory with the defeat of Elche.

They started well. Suarez scored his 200th La Liga game with his 151st goal, breaking the deadlock four minutes before halftime to send his team into the leading halftime.

Two minutes from the hour mark, Suárez registered his second and Atlético’s, putting Los Rojiblancos in what looked like cruise control only for Boye to strike back five minutes later.

However, the hosts held firm and consolidated their victory heading into the last ten thanks to a penalty from Costa.

The result leaves Atlético with a three-point advantage at the top of the table with two games in hand against the second, Real Sociedad and one against the third-placed, Madrid. Elche falls to position 15.
