Atlético de Madrid are off to a strong start in La Liga this season and are now considered favorites to win the league title, according to a Marca poll.
Diego Simeone’s team is undefeated in its first seven league games, winning five and drawing two, while conceding just two, the lowest of any team in Europe’s top five leagues.
Marca’s report describes how 42 percent of its respondents believed Atleti was the favorite to win the league title this season, the first since 2014.
Reigning champion Real Madrid lags behind with just 24 percent of the vote after a disappointing start to the campaign – sitting one point behind Atleti after having played one more match, following Sunday’s disappointing defeat 4-1 in Valencia.
Twenty-one percent of those polled believe that Barcelona, which have won eight of the last 12 league titles, are still the favorites despite having won only one of their last five league games.
Real Sociedad leads the league, with 20 points from nine games, having played more than other rivals, and has won its last five games in the division, with 13 percent of readers believing that the Basque club can claim their first league title since the 1980s.
