Authorities say 11 women, 10 men and a baby died after a three-story building under construction collapsed.

At least 22 people, including a baby, were killed when an unfinished three-story building collapsed in eastern Ghana, emergency officials said Friday.

The accident occurred on Tuesday while a church community was conducting a service at the building, which was still under construction, in the Eastern Region city of Akyem Batabi, said National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) official Richard Amo-Yartey.

Among the dead are 11 women, a baby and 10 men, Amo-Yartey said.

A rescue team made up of emergency workers, police, soldiers and firefighters searched for the survivors trapped inside the building.

The number of missing remained unclear on Friday, while eight wounded were taken to hospital, according to Amo-Yartey.

Local media reported that more than 60 people were present at the scene when the accident occurred.

Work on the building began in 1994.
