Dean Smith claims that the penalty for Manchester United’s victory against his Aston Villa team should not have come in the Midlands club’s 2-1 defeat at Old Trafford.
Villa drew 1-1 after a Bertrand Traore goal early in the second half canceled out Anthony Martial’s first goal when Paul Pogba fell in the area to a challenge from midfielder Douglas Luiz.
Michael Oliver awarded a penalty that Bruno Fernandes converted into a United win and while Smith thought it was a real-time penalty, the Villa manager believes Pogba stumbled after watching a replay.
Smith told Sky Sports: ‘I thought it was a penalty at the time, but I looked at him after the game and saw he tripped. I don’t see why Michael (Oliver) couldn’t have looked at it.
‘That’s what VAR is for, right? He has stumbled. There are margins in football. I’ve seen it again and I don’t think it’s a penalty. ‘
Villa’s manager later told the BBC: ‘I thought Douglas Luiz was too attached to Paul Pogba, but then I went in and saw him again and I think he tripped. I think there are enough doubts there to send the referee to the screen. ‘
Villa fell behind at half-time when Martial headed a cross from Aaron Wan-Bissaka, but Burkina Faso winger Traore scored a shot from close range to bring Villa to Smith’s level in the second period.
But Luiz awarded Pogba the penalty seconds after Villa scored the equalizer and United were able to keep the lead.
Smith wasn’t happy with the way his team started the game, but he was happy with the display of the second half.
‘The first half we were miles apart. The first 15 minutes felt like a testimony. Then they injected him with some rhythm and deservedly moved on.
“ I asked for more at halftime and we deserved to get back in the game. Our goalkeeper had to make some good saves, but they were all out of the box. ”
The loss was Villa’s first loss on the road since late November and his fifth overall in 15 games, but the Midlands club are still in sixth place on 26 points with a game in hand over all five teams by On top of them.
Smith claims that their recent results, which include away wins at Arsenal and Leicester City along with beating Liverpool at home, show that they are capable of competing at the top end of the table.
Villa’s manager continued: ‘We know we are on a good path at the moment. We believe we have five key arrivals for players who are ready for the Premier League.
“This is only our second season in the division, but competing here and against Liverpool and Arsenal shows that our journey is going well so far.”
