Supporters of the opposition Democratic National Congress (NDC) in Ashaiman took to their local streets to demonstrate against the results of the 2020 presidential election.
The Electoral Commission headed by its president, Madame Jean Adukwei Mensa, declared the current president Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, of the New Patriotic Party (PNP), as the winner of the 2020 presidential elections after obtaining 6,730,413 votes that represent 51.59 percent of the valid votes. his closest contender, former NDC president John Dramani Mahama got 6,214,889 votes, which is 47.36 percent.
However, this was not well received by the NDC leadership and its supporters, leading to a series of protests with Ashaiman taking his part Sunday morning, which saw aggrieved supporters dressed in red take to the streets. singing war songs.
They carried placards and burned truck tires on some streets, especially from Valco to the Lebanon crossing, main traffic and the Middle East areas.
Some of the signs read “Stolen Verdict”, “Declare Results Correct” and “Declare Techiman Results Now”.
According to the protesters, they won the presidential and parliamentary elections, so declaring President Akufo-Addo the winner was unacceptable.
They said they could not wait another four years to get what was rightfully theirs, and therefore asked Ghanaians to protect their votes.
Since then, calm has returned to the area as police were close by to ensure it did not escalate. Staff from the Ghana National Fire Service were also available to put out the fire they started.
