Many were surprised when Luis Enrique gave Marco Asensio an international recall before the clash with the Netherlands, given his 20-month absence due to injury, but the coach, by his own confession, ‘loves’ the player, although the Madridista admitted that he feels certain kinship with the Oranje, stating that he has Dutch blood.
Asensio’s last international appearance was on June 10, 2019, with a 3-0 win over Sweden, but on Wednesday he could be ready to represent La Roja once again.
“Holland is like my second country, half of my family is from here, I have Dutch blood,” Asensio explained to the press.
“It brings back great memories and I remember a lot about my Dutch family. I have a very good relationship with my family here, and I try to visit them once a year.”
Asensio, who has not played for Spain in so long, is really excited to be working with Luis Enrique again, even if the game is friendly.
“It’s like an official match for the stadium and the rival we face, that’s how we approach it,” Asensio added.
