The forward sheds light on his promising start to life with the Porcupine Warriors
Asante Kotoko’s new kid on the Kwame Opoku block has revealed that he idolizes Argentina and Barcelona legend Lionel Messi, following his brilliant effort in the Ghana Premier League (GPL) on Monday.
Comparisons have been made between Opoku and Messi after the former scored what has been described as a ‘messy’ goal during the match against Liberty Professionals.
He found the back of the net twice that day, his two goals earning the Porcupine Warriors a 2-0 home win in matchday eight at Accra Sports Stadium.
“I learn a lot from Lionel Messi, so if you see me scoring Messi-like goals, that’s the secret. I practice most of his goals. I take inspiration from him all the time, “said Opoku as reported by Sportsworldghana.
Against Liberty, Opoku picked up the ball on his chest in the air outside the area after a long pass from Brazilian Fabio Gama. The forward then beat three men as he drove into the box before coldly cutting the ball over Liberty goalkeeper Kofi Baah to make it 2-0 in the 19th minute.
His first game in the 10th minute was also assisted by Gama, who was making his first start for the Porcupine Warriors since sealing a two-year transfer last October.
“I am very excited to play with Fabio Gama because he is a very good player and I would love to see him appear in every game with me on the field,” Opoku said of his burgeoning association with the former Brazil U17 and U20 forward.
“He is my best friend and we have good conditions to speak in the training fields and this is only the beginning, it is a matter of time and physical condition that people see more than they saw.”
Opoku has scored five goals in six Premier League games for Kotoko so far this season. He also has a help in his name.
The forward joined the Porcupine Warriors of Ghana’s lower division Nkoranza Warriors in February last year, but was forced to wait until November to begin proving himself due to the premature termination of the 2019-20 GPL season due to to the coronavirus outbreak.
He will chase his sixth goal when Kotoko meets Wafa on matchday nine of the top flight.
