Despite losing the signing of Joseph Esso, Kumasi Asante Kotoko believes that his new policy on player transfers will serve the better interest of players than the existing one.
A new transfer policy that was introduced by the club’s new CEO, Nana Yaw Amponsah, will now avoid paying registration fees to players and instead distribute it as part of their salaries for the number of years the player signed.
Esso, who joined Dreams FC after he turned down the Porcupine Warriors’ interest, demanded that they pay him 50,000 GH as a subscription fee, but because he rejected the new policy that allowed the club to distribute the amount as part of his salary , the deal was rejected.
Speaking to Graphic Sports about the new policy in an interview yesterday, the club’s public relations officer, Moses Antwi Benefo, said that because the policy was novel, it was difficult for players to accept.
He explained that the policy was the best, as it ensured that the club’s players received adequate remuneration rather than receiving a lump sum only to receive a poor payment at the end of the month.
While some critics believe the policy was a major disincentive for quality players to join the club, the club’s PRO believes that it will rather guarantee players a better salary.
He was of the opinion that politics might not be popular with many footballers now, but he was hopeful that those who believed in it would certainly accept it and join the club.
According to Benefo, the club’s CEO was unhappy with the low salaries Ghanaians received at the end of each month and wanted to change the narrative so that players were paid very well as the only means by which quality players could stay in the league.
He questioned the justification for advancing a huge sum of money as a registration fee to a player when the same could be done in a different way to guarantee the financial support of the player.
The PRO hinted that it was one of the policies Amponsah hoped to implement across the board should he be the GFA chair to ensure that Ghana’s players get paid well.
