The Asante Akim Northern District Agriculture Directorate is partnering two companies in France and Canada to boost pepper, onion and tomato production in the district.

The association, which also includes the Agogo Traditional Council and the District’s Business Resource Center, would help provide quality seeds, irrigation services, agricultural inputs, and financial support to farmers to increase production of these crops.

Eric Dwomoh, the district’s director of agriculture, who made this known, said that a pilot project would begin in April 2021.

He said the project, when successful, would help the district earn about $ 200 million from the export of these vegetables by 2028.

Speaking to the Ghana News Agency in Agogo on the sidelines of the district’s celebration of National Farmer’s Day this year, Mr. Dwomoh said that the District was able to lead the production of these vegetables for both the local market and for export.

He commended Nana Akuoko Sarpong, Agogo Traditional Chief Executive Officer for giving land to support the project and said the project would help create jobs for young people and lift them out of poverty.

About forty farmers were honored at the award ceremony.

They received backpack sprayers, motorcycles, bicycles, machetes, wellies, two wax prints each, certificates and others.

Francis Oti Boateng, the district’s executive director, said improved security that prevented Fulani herdsmen from destroying farmland had helped increase food production in the area.

He said that three farmers from the District received national awards this year and called for unity and peace to promote development in the District.

Mr. Enock Osafo Asiedu from Agogo, emerged as the best farmer in the district.

It has 10 acres of cocoa farming, 280 acres of bananas, 150 acres of cashew nuts, 50 acres of ginger, 10 acres of yams, 10 acres of teak plantation, and more than 300 birds and livestock.

Mr. Asiedu took home a tricycle, two pairs of wellies, two backpack spray machines, a boombox, and a certificate.
