Mikel Arteta insists that he still loves being in the direction of football despite describing his first year at Arsenal as one of the most difficult in the club’s history.

Arteta celebrates his first anniversary as Arsenal manager on Sunday, following Saturday’s trip to face Everton at Goodison Park, live on Sky Sports.

The Spaniard says that structural changes in the Emirates over the past 12 months have shaken the club’s foundations, and while the first half of the year was marked by success in the FA Cup and Community Shield, the recent form in the Premier League has taken the shine in its progress.

“It has been one of the most challenging years in the club’s history, for many different reasons. I think we have come a long way and implemented positive changes that have worked well,” he said.

“We have gone through structural changes throughout the club that have shaken it up in a big way.

“The highlight of the year are the two trophies and the most disappointing thing is that we haven’t had our fans with us to carry us through these difficult times.

“It could have been a really positive year, but recent form in the Premier League has washed away the shine of what we have done this year. We have to accept that our form in the Premier League has not been good enough.”

Arteta says he loves being on the bench despite a tumultuous first year in office, which has also been compounded by the challenges brought on by the coronavirus pandemic.

He said: “I know how difficult this job can be under normal conditions. When you come to a club that goes through what we have in a year and on top of that we have a pandemic that is affecting the entire industry. The profession is even more challenging.

“At the same time I tell them that I love what I do and I feel very lucky and privileged to be in this football club. The circumstances and the context are what they are, we have to face them.”
