Arsene Wenger believes Manchester United need to explain to Paul Pogba that it is “in their best interest to act” amid speculation about a departure from Old Trafford.

Pogba’s agent Mino Raiola revealed earlier this week that the midfielder wants to leave United, adding that the club should consider firing him or face the possibility of losing him in a free transfer.

With conversations about a move continuing to weigh on United as they strive for consistency, Pogba has found himself on and off the team under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

But former Arsenal manager Wenger believes Solskjaer and the club could be handling the situation better.

“I think you have to explain to a player that no matter what his future plan is, his interest and his job is to act for the current club,” Wenger told ESPN’s “Caught Offside” podcast.

“It is the best way to prepare for your future, to play well in the present.

“When I saw Pogba walk into RB Leipzig on Tuesday night, I was sorry he didn’t start the game because he immediately had a huge impact.”

After they crashed in the Champions League courtesy of their 3-2 loss in Germany, Pogba started on Saturday against rivals Manchester City but failed to inspire his team into a 0-0 draw.

Former United player Gary Neville said the time has come for Pogba to leave Old Trafford as the speculation appears to have a negative effect on the team.

Whether you’ve been loved or not, you don’t want to be here. You have to find an outlet for him, ‘Neville said on Sky Sports.

“I’m not going to try, but he doesn’t want to play for Manchester United, he wants to play for Real Madrid, Barça or another club like that. They can’t sign another player with that agent (Raiola), that’s enough. ‘

Despite seemingly constant criticism of the French World Cup winner, coach Solskjaer continues to praise his attitude and insists that he is still impacting his team.

“There have been other players who refuse to train and refuse to play, they are no longer here, of course, but Paul hasn’t done that once,” he said.

“He has the quality and the desire to do well when he comes in, like he did against Leipzig, when he had a positive impact.
