Mikel Arteta could be fired by Arsenal if he fails to beat Everton this weekend. That’s the opinion of talkSPORT insider Jamie O’Hara, who says he doesn’t see the Gunners improving with the Spaniard under fire in charge.
Arsenal are enduring their worst start to the season since 1974 and are currently ranked 15th in the Premier League.
The Gunners are winless in their last six league games with a weekday draw against Southampton that ended a four-game losing streak.
After falling behind with a first-half goal from former striker Theo Walcott, Pierre-Emerick Aubamyang scored just his third goal of the season to even the score after the break.
Center-back Gabriel Magalhaes was sent off after receiving two yellow cards, leaving his teammates with one man fewer than the high-flying Saints.
ONLY IN Arsenal News: Aubameyang explains the reason for poor discipline under Mikel Arteta
“You are not Newcastle, you are not Palace, this is Arsenal, one of the biggest clubs in the world, it is not acceptable to be 15th in the league.”
Gabriel’s dismissal was Arsenal’s third in their last five league games, as questions continue to arise about discipline problems at the team.
The Gunners have accumulated seven red cards since Arteta’s appointment a year ago, more than twice as many as any other team in that time.
Several Arsenal players have been criticized for their poor performance this season and O’Hara believes the problems at the club run deep.
He added: “They don’t have leaders, and we can blame Arteta, it’s always like that, but those players are absolutely killing him with their performances.
“They are just not good enough, the players are sent off every week and there are players with a lot of money who need to be playing. They are disappointing the club enormously.”
“They are very far from that and they have lost all kinds of identity and who they are as a team. I don’t know where they are going. “
Arsenal travel to Goodison Park for their next game to face an Everton team just five points off the top of the table.
Carlo Ancelotti’s team have achieved two impressive victories in their last two matches, beating Chelsea and Leicester respectively.
The Italian manager was named Toffees chief just 24 hours after Arteta was confirmed at the Arsenal job last year, and O’Hara suggested the Gunners made the wrong decision.
“I always said that Arsenal should have chosen someone like Carlo Ancelotti,” he said. “But he went to Everton and Arteta got the job, and it hasn’t worked.
“How long do you leave it? I don’t see them improving, I don’t see the revolution that people have talked about ”.
