Arsenal players face drastic pay cuts if they are relegated from the Premier League.
Several players will be forced to take 25 percent cuts if the unthinkable happens and the Gunners, who are 15th on the table, drop out of the top flight.
Such clauses are common in smaller clubs, which are expected to face a greater relegation threat.
But even Arsenal, which is one of the traditional big six in English football and hoped to be in the mix for the Champions League qualification this season, has anticipated the financial chaos that relegation would cause and included reduction clauses of salary in player contracts.
The North London club’s annual salary bill is over £ 150 million, with players like Mesut Ozil and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang among the highest paid players in England.
It’s unclear if the 25 percent figure is a club-wide stance, but numerous players are known to be in that percentage reduction in the event of relegation.
The Gunners are four points above the relegation zone, having won just two points in their last seven league games.
The prospect of them facing a fight to remain in the top division would, under normal circumstances, be unthinkable.
But their poor start to the season and coach Mikel Arteta’s struggle to stop their slide on the table has raised fears that they could be drawn into a relegation battle.
