Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang will be fined after being late when the Arsenal team met for the North London derby.

Aubameyang was immediately punished by coach Mikel Arteta, who made the bold decision to leave his captain for Arsenal’s clash with their biggest rival, Tottenham.

The Gabon forward was an unused substitute at Emirates and watched as substitute captain Alexandre Lacazette scored the goal of Arsenal’s goal from the penalty spot in the 2-1 victory.

And Aubameyang faces a fine to accompany his bench, following his breach of club rules, as it is not the first time he has been late.

Arteta’s decision was important because of Aubameyang’s condition and form – he has scored nine goals in his previous 12 games.

But the Arsenal manager has taken a tough stance on discipline in the locker room, saying: ‘I made what I thought was the right decision.

‘(Standards of behavior) are the foundation and platform on which we can build something in the medium and long term that is sustainable. That’s why I keep talking about it and acting on it. ‘

The Arsenal boss, however, played down suggestions of a break with the “incredible” captain Aubameyang.

He added: ‘We have a way of living together that we have to respect each other and that’s it. But he (Aubameyang) is an amazing guy, he’s probably one of the most important players on the team, he’s our captain. These things happen, we move forward. Let’s enjoy the victory. ‘

When asked if his misstep was being late, Arteta was unmoved, adding: ‘I will never say anything about what happens in the locker room.’

Arteta instead turned to Alexandre Lacazette to lead the Gunners at the Emirates while Aubameyang started on the bench.

The Arsenal manager made three substitutions in the 2-1 derby win, but chose to bypass Aubameyang, replacing Nicolas Pepe, Willian and Mohamed Elneny.

The 31-year-old has been in good shape lately, scoring twice against Benfica in the Europa League round of 16 and finding the net four times in his previous three Premier League starts.

Sky Sports expert and Sportsmail columnist Jamie Redknapp says Aubameyang will be “disappointed” with the call, but believes he will do everything he can to “make things right.”

Redknapp said: ‘Obviously he wants to play in this game. You will be disappointed. I agree with the guys, it’s hard to speculate that we don’t know, but the coach has shown his muscles.

‘They cannot be rules for some and different rules for others. You feel like you shouldn’t play him in this game.

But what he does is give others a chance to whoever has been hired as a replacement. Drawing a line below he’s on the bench, he’ll probably be the kind of character who’s desperate to come and make up. ‘
