Arsenal sack mascot due to cost reduction measures

Arsenal fans might have expected players like Sead Kolasinac, Lucas Torreira and Matteo Guendouzi to leave today, but not this man.

The beloved Gunnersaurus mascot has fallen victim to Arsenal’s cost reduction.

The dinosaur has been a permanent fixture in home games since 1993, but it has been let go because paper is seen as no longer necessary.

The absence of fans at the games has affected revenue on match days and Gunnersaurus is adding to another 55 layoffs in North London.

In August, Arsenal announced the decision to make job cuts as they sought to streamline due to the coronavirus pandemic, but the club insists the mascot will return, according to The Athletic.

Jerry Quy, who played the role of Gunnersauraus, is very popular at Arsenal as he also participated in the Junior Gunners and Travel Club.

It has been inside the costume since it was created in 1993.

He stayed true to his role during the confinement, posting a series of ‘Gunnersaurus at home’ posts on social media.

In an update shared with his Twitter followers, Gunnersaurus revealed that he had been ironing, gardening and watching Bargain Hunt after being forced to self-isolate due to Mikel Arteta’s positive COVID test in March.

He wrote: “Hope everyone is okay. I’ve been keeping busy. I just enjoyed a little gardening this morning.

“I’ll finish some shirts before Bargain Hunt later.”
