Owen Hargreaves believes Arsenal can win the Europa League after the Gunners’ 4-2 win over Dundalk, as Martin Keown compared young Folarin Balogun to Ian Wright and Andy Cole.
The Gunners traveled to Ireland knowing that they had already booked their place in the knockout stages of the competition, as Mikel Arteta handed over several minutes to the youngsters against their Group B opponents.
And goals from Eddie Nketiah, Mohamed Elneny, Joe Willock and Balogun extended Arsenal’s 100% record in the competition in another positive performance in Europe.
Hargreaves insisted that the Premier League team should be a strong contender to win the competition at the end of the season, before praising the promising players that arrive.
“Arsenal have a real chance to win this competition,” Hargreaves told BT Sport. ‘Balogun came in and had a good impact. We have seen Willock have a tremendous impact in this competition and Saka before.
“It is brilliant for these young men from the academy to come here and play football at this level and this will mean a lot to them. A couple more came today and showed moments of true quality.
Meanwhile, former Gunners defender Keown praised Balogun, who once again impressed from the bench for Arteta’s team.
“I look at him and think ‘he remembers the name’ really with his looks tonight,” said the Arsenal legend.
The way it bonded, it’s a big change. You try to compare, is it Andy Cole or Ian Wright? There is that kind of movement in him. I know they are renowned players and if he can keep up, he will have some career.
“ I like the way he always looks at the shoulder and its movements. The way he scores the goal, the way he arrives, he’s aiming, give me, this is my moment.
“He has had to wait for his opportunity, he is 19 years old and shows very good signs.”
Arteta hopes his team’s form in Europe can help turn their fortunes around in the Premier League, with the north London club languishing at 15th amid murmurs of discontent from fans.
