It was a night to forget for former Arsenal manager Unai Emery and his Villareal team in La Liga against Barcelona.
At the Camp Nou, Ronald Koeman’s Barcelona held a 4-0 lead at halftime in their first game of the new La Liga season, a score that caught the attention of Arsenal fans.
Former Gunners coach Unai Emery was on the visitors’ bench at the Camp Nou, having taken over at Villarreal.
He joined a three-year contract in July, succeeding Javi Calleja, who had led the team to fifth place.
It is Emery’s first job since he was fired by Arsenal in November 2019 after 18 months in office.
The Spaniard was fired by the Gunners after their worst winless streak in 27 years.
Having earned a win and a draw in his first two games in charge, Emery found his team four fewer goals after 45 minutes at Barcelona, who were playing for the first time under new manager Ronald Koeman.
Ansu Fati scored a double before Lionel Messi converted a penalty and an own goal by Pau Torres just before half-time left the visitors with a mountain to climb, with Villareal unable to recover.
Here’s what some Arsenal fans were saying about the game on Twitter.
@black_tolani: Unai Emery, tactical genius.
@ jarex2_official: Unai Emery is doing a great job at Villarreal.
@_ZILLIONAIRE: Unpopular opinion: Emery ruined Arsenal.
@weak_spell: Unai Emery giving another masterclass as usual.
@MwauraMarvin: Emery is losing 4-0 at halftime to Barcelona’s worst team since 2007 and some thought he was the man for us ???

@ScuderiaxMike: Emery with a stench …
@AntonnioM_: What exactly was the reasoning behind the hiring of Unai Emery at Arsenal?
@ 2_afce: Villarreal 4-0 down at half-time. Emery said he would rather win 5-4 than (tie) 0-0.
