Only Robin van Persie (46) and Olivier Giroud (40) have more Premier League goals at Emirates Stadium than Theo Walcott (38)
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta hopes a draw with Southampton will show the beginning of his team’s recovery after they ended a three-game Premier League losing streak despite being down to 10 men.
Theo Walcott opened the scoring for the Saints in form on their return to their old club with a delicious beating of goalkeeper Bernd Leno.
But Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang finished smartly after the break to tie as Arsenal ended a 797-minute streak in the Premier League without an open-play goal.
However, the Gunners’ poor discipline cost them once again, as Gabriel was sent off after being booked twice in four minutes.
Substitute Nathan Redmond hit the bar shortly after when Southampton pushed for a winner that would have briefly moved them to the top of the league.
The visitors couldn’t make their pressure pay and almost gave in on the other end at the end when Rob Holding’s header also shook the wood.
The draw places Southampton ahead of Leicester City in third place, while Arteta’s team remains 15th in what is Arsenal’s worst start to a top flight since the 1974-75 season.
