Jill Roord’s shot had a great deflection from Millie Turner (center) to put Arsenal in front

Arsenal raised their hopes of a place in the Champions League next season by beating three main rivals Manchester United in the women’s Super League.

Jill Roord’s shot deflected United defender Millie Turner to give the Gunners a lead in the third minute.

Lotte Wubben-Moy headed in after the break to double the lead, but Arsenal had to watch the game with 10 players after Beth Mead was sent off.

United remain third in the table and Arsenal are three points behind.

However, the Gunners in fourth place have a game in hand.

Defeat almost every chance for United to challenge the top two Chelsea and Manchester City for the WSL title, as they are nine points behind the leaders with five games to play.

Relive Arsenal’s WSL win over Manchester United

The battle for a place in the top three and a European campaign in 2021-22 now appears to be between Arsenal and Manchester United, with fifth-ranked Everton 10 points behind United.

They dominated possession after going back, but lacked a leading edge in front of goal, with Lauren James and Christen Press guilty of missing decent chances.

Wubben-Moy’s header early in the second half gave the Gunners a cushion before Mead’s second yellow card for a lunge on Lucy Staniforth made the final 30 minutes nervous.

Arsenal’s next game is the North London derby against Spurs at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Saturday 27 March, while Manchester United host West Ham in distress on the same day.
