Son and Kane have teamed up for four goals against Southampton, two against Manchester United and West Ham and now another against Burnley.
Harry Kane believes Tottenham “can do something special” after his brilliant partnership with Son Heung-min gave Spurs a 1-0 Premier League victory over Burnley.
Son’s header since Kane’s pitch was the ninth time this season that they have combined for a Premier League goal, and the 29th time overall.
“It’s great,” forward Kane told BBC Sport. “Sonny and I have had a nice little partnership recently and I hope it continues.
“I think having more understanding when I fall deep so that he runs behind [is the difference]. It is also just trust.
“Even today it wasn’t an incredible assist, but Sonny liked him.”
That makes them a company regarded as the second most prolific combination in Premier League history.
- 36 – Didier Drogba and Frank Lampard (Chelsea) 29 – Harry Kane and Son Heung-min (Spurs) 29 – David Silva and Sergio Aguero (Man City) 29 – Robert Pires and Thierry Henry (Arsenal) 27 – Darren Anderton and Teddy Sheringham (Spurs)
The result takes the Spurs from 11th place to fifth in the league, just two points behind leaders Everton. They are also the league’s top scorers with 16 goals in six games.
Son is the top individual scorer with eight and Kane has been directly involved in 13 goals (five goals and eight assists), a record for a Premier League player after six games.
So where do Kane and Son rank among the great duos in the Premier League and how far can Spurs go this season?
‘Let’s share the credit with Mauricio’ – Mourinho on the duo Tottenham coach José Mourinho praises Harry Kane’s spirit and pace of work
“Son has been fantastic,” said BBC Radio 5 Live expert Leon Osman, a former Everton midfielder.
“For three or four years he has played at an incredible level. His pace and intelligence are great and he always seems to have a finished product.
“Son and Kane’s partnership seems instinctive, one of those things you can’t work on. You know where everyone else will be. There’s that instinct where they’ll attack the ball.”
After the game, Spurs coach Mourinho shared the credit for his association with his predecessor Mauricio Pochettino.
“It is an understanding that comes from Mauricio’s time,” Mourinho said. “I don’t want all the credit, let’s share with Mauricio. They play together for a long time, probably in a different way because Harry isn’t always a nine now.
“What I like most about both is that they are two great players but close friends, without jealousy, they both play for the team.”
Is Kane playing different now? Harry Kane was crucial on both ends, clearing a header off the line before setting up the winner.
Kane has already broken his personal record for assists in a Premier League season with eight. He has another 32 games to add to his record.
He also saved the Spurs from being left behind when he headed James Tarkowski’s effort off the line, but he only had four touches in the Burnley area and failed to get a shot on goal.
So what has changed?
“When the coach came in, he said when he went deep, wingers had to run behind,” Kane said. “It’s something I’ve been doing for a while, but I think now we’re looking at the final product.”
Mourinho told BBC Sport: “At the last minute I was pushing and sliding tackles, trying to stop the attacks. When you want to win, you do everything for the team. There is no room for the singles or prima donnas, Harry has this spirit. and it’s fantastic.
“He has done incredible with all the coaches here. The way the team plays, he is very comfortable because he is good inside the box and also great outside the box.”
Osman said: “This is how football seems to go, a lot of goals with the forwards playing on the shoulder and using the rhythm.
“Harry Kane doesn’t have that breakneck pace, so he started slowing down to be disinterested and create chances. His goal tally won’t be affected, but he’s added a lot more to his game.
“Look at Alan Shearer, he was a very dynamic forward in his youth and then he changed to a forward holding the ball and attacking crosses as he grew up.”
Burnley’s boss, Sean Dyche, said: “I think [Kane] she has had better nights to be beautiful. He’s a great player and the best players do the right thing and make the right decisions. “
Is this Tottenham’s season?
Spurs haven’t won a trophy since the 2008 EFL Cup and haven’t won the title since 1961.
Pochettino did a great job during his time with Spurs, but failed to take them to silver, and he never really recovered from his Champions League final loss to Liverpool.
So could they really win the league?
Soccer journalist Rory Smith said on BBC Radio 5 Live: “If a team like Everton or Spurs can continue to produce results, they have a chance because those elite teams need all the gears of the engine to work.”
“There will be more days when the big teams do not fire because of the situation [caused by the coronavirus pandemic] And if these teams keep moving forward, there will be possibilities in a way that there would not be in a normal season.
“When Leicester won the Premier League, a lot of things happened to make that happen and it looks like that could be happening again.”
Kane added: “We know that with the team we have and the players we have we can do something special.
“It is still early [to talk about a title challenge]. We need to take each game as it comes. I know it’s a cliché, but we still have a lot to learn and build, but I think nights like this will give us a lot of confidence.
“These are the games where you need three points if you’re going to be up there at the end of the season.”
