The editor-in-chief of the New Crusading Guide newspaper, Abdul Malik Kweku Baako Jnr, has charged the government of Ghana with applying force against attacks by the secessionist group from Western Togo.

Ghanaians, on Friday September 25, 2020, woke up to a secessionist group that was causing chaos in the Volta region as they clamored for independence to form a new country.

The group blocked the main roads of the Volta Region, preventing vehicular movement and stranding passengers traveling to areas of the Region.

Furthermore, they attacked the Aveyime and Mepe police stations in North Tongu district, amid demands that the Volta region be an autonomous country known as “Western Togoland”.

On Tuesday September 29, some unidentified gunmen who allegedly belonged to the secessionist group, in protest, also set fire to some buses in the courtyard of the State Transportation Corporation (STC) in Ho.

Following the attacks, a joint team made up of the Ghana Army and Police Service has arrested some suspects in connection with the riot.

Addressing the topic of Peace FM’s ‘Kokrokoo’ program, Kweku Baako regretted the group’s approach to attracting government attention to their issue.

According to him, the group should not entertain themselves by stressing that their action is an attack on the constitution of Ghana and the entire nation.

In addition, he expressed a strong dissenting opinion with those who ask for a negotiation between the group and the government, stating that there is nothing to talk about.

“Dialogue for what? Dialogue with whom and for what?”

“Do you sit with them to achieve what purpose? … They are already on board. They are inside Ghana. They are Ghanaian citizens. So what are we going to negotiate?” he questioned.

For Mr. Baako, if the group continues to exert force on the nation, the state must respond accordingly.

“If they use force, we should apply counterforce … If they apply force, the State of Ghana should apply counterforce to keep Ghana’s unitary character intact. Ghana is a unitary Republic. The 1956 elections determined that; we became a Republic in 1960. We are a unitary Republic, that is what we are and that is what the constitution recognizes. If you try to change it by force, you are attacking the constitution and the nation, and the nation has the right to apply the counterforce [operative words – counter force] to ensure that we keep intact our territorial integrity, our national sovereignty, the republican unitary character of this State. There is no compromise in that; there will be no negotiation ”, he insisted.
