The Apowa Community Library, which was to serve as a gateway to knowledge acquisition, is now home to weeds, reptiles, and poor families of the deaf and dumb, as the project has stalled for the past 13 years.
The library, established 13 years ago with the goal of serving and promoting learning in Ahanta West Township schools, has broken ceilings, destroyed furniture and cracks everywhere.
The dilapidated state of the building according to a member of the community is due to the conflict surrounding the land of the library project.
“The thieves have removed some of the sheets and furniture from the ceilings because there is no security, the deaf and dumb family is the one who is now taking over the place,” he said.
The facility that was built by the former Member of Parliament for the Ahanta West constituency, Mr. Samuel Johnfiah, 13 years ago, has been turned into a white elephant.
Margret Mensah, a sophomore at Apowa Methodist High School, appealed to the Ahanta West Directorate of Education and the Minister of Education to renovate the library to promote the education system in the municipality.
The UN Sustainable Development Goal 4.6 states that: “By 2030, it should ensure that all youth and a substantial proportion of adults, both men and women, achieve literacy and numeracy. at least a fixed level of competence in functional skills (a) literacy and (b) numeracy “.
The Assemblyman of the electoral area of Aworozo, Mr. Cephas Essilfie Ansah, regretted that the abandoned library had served many communities surrounding Apowa, but due to the conflicts surrounding the land on which the library was built, it has been abandoned. from the library. at the mercy of the rain and the sun.
Therefore, Mr. Ansah asked the head of Apowa and the land owners to resolve any disputes related to the library that has been left unattended for several years to help promote the education system in Apowa and Ahanta West as a whole. .
However, Mr. Kweku Dekyi, a member of the family who owns the land, assured that the family would always be willing to hand over the land to the West Ahanta Municipal Assembly, “if only the West Ahanta Municipal Assembly and the boss will call in the family to resolve the differences between them “.
But as Ghana continues to grapple with efforts to increase the literacy rate, dedication to this abandoned Library would go a long way.
