The death toll from the recent demolition of Apam Beach has risen to 13, according to Gomoa West Member of Parliament Richard Gyan Mensah.
Giving details about the incident on the floor of Parliament on Thursday, the legislator explained that the information available to him indicates that a high tide washed ashore where the teenagers were swimming, dragging several of them into the sea.
“Unfortunately, only two of the victims survived but they were in critical condition. They were immediately transferred to St. Luke’s Catholic Hospital in Apam, where they were treated and released the next day.
“Mr. President, it is extremely devastating to report that the bodies of now 13 teenagers who were rescued from the sea include 11 boys and 2 girls. They are all in their teens, ”he informed the Chamber.
He continued: “Of the 13 dead, 10 have been identified by their relatives, we hope that the remaining 3 will be identified by their family, the search for the remaining bodies is still ongoing.”
Sympathizing with grieving families, Mr. Mensah quoted Psalm 41: 1-2 from the Bible and asked God to be his refuge and strength.
“I use this platform to express my sincere gratitude to the bereaved families and continue to pray that the good God himself will strengthen and comfort them as we continue to gather the necessary resources to support in such a difficult time.”
The Gomoa West also praised Apam fishermen and residents for coming together to rescue teens and support law enforcement agencies to carry out their task.
Contributing to the statement, Interior Minister Ambros Dery noted that the Inspector General of Police (IGP) and security agencies are committed to investigating what caused the deaths of the children.
He also warned the public not to make unsubstantiated accusations against the victims.
In his turn, the deputy of Pusiga, Lardi Ayamba also asked the government to ensure that lifeguards are deployed on our beaches to prevent incidents of this type from occurring in the future.
