A well-known member of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Asawase constituency of the Ashanti region, Murtala Mohammed, has defected to the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
Prince Akuta, as he is affectionately known, announced his decision at a press conference on Thursday, September 17, which was largely attended by the NPP bases in the Asawase enclave.
Murtala said his decision to walk across the carpet to campaign for the ruling party is motivated by the track record of the Akufo-Addo-led administration, especially in the Zongo communities.
Murtala believes that a second term from the Akufo-Addo government could improve the lives of members of the Muslim community in Ghana, citing the successes achieved during the Hajj pilgrimage and the government’s payment of Arabic tutors.
“I am fully convinced that if the Ghanaians renew the mandate of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, the PNP will be in a better position for everyone. I especially urged my brothers and sisters in Zongo to work hard to ensure the continuity of this administration for the betterment of all the people of Ghana, ”he said.
The Anti-Muntaka campaign
The Asawase seat is one of the three electoral districts of the Ashanti region occupied by the NDC in the stronghold of the ruling party.
Akuta, with his youthful exuberance, played a pivotal role in the 2016 election when he campaigned on behalf of the incumbent MP, Muntaka Mubarak.
However, in an interesting twist, the man who was elected an executive from the Aboabo branch of the NDC campaigned vigorously for a Masawudu Mubarick, Muntaka’s only contender.
The decision to challenge the minority main whip was rejected by the party, prompting widespread unrest among the youth.
Prince Akuta, who is widely known on social platforms, has vowed to take the seat from the NDC.
The municipal executive director of Asokore Mampong and the parliamentary candidate of Asawase, Alidu Seidu for their part, described the move as welcoming and timely.
“In 2016, I remember during our night mini rallies, one day we were in Asawase, when I arrived at Aboabo Number One, Akuta was there with his team, campaigning. When we left there, before I arrived at Adukrom Bola, he was there organizing another program. So, I saw him as one of the guys that can haunt our way of doing things and our campaign, and he did the same.
“So based on that, I know what it can do. So if you’ve joined us today, we’re more than excited to welcome you. That’s why I asked him to put the efforts he put into when he was with the NDC in this our campaign, because like I said before, Asawase is now or never. With him, I firmly believe that our chances will be much brighter than before, ”Alidu Seidu told the media.
He called on party members to accept the new entrant as the party prepares in time to win all 47 seats in the Ashanti region. Political parties have often been hit by mass defections in election years.
Awal Mohammed, Deputy Communications Officer for the NDC Zongo Caucus, also joined the NPP prior to the 2016 election. He is currently the Public Relations Officer for the Youth Employment Authority (YEA).
