Anita Halm and Alex Dorpenyo, 17, crowned Ghana’s best rugby players

Anita Halm, 17, and Ghana Eagles captain Alex Dorpenyo have been named by the Ghana Sports Writers Association (SWAG) as the best men’s and women’s rugby players of 2019.

Anita Halm, a key member of the Ghana national team, Women Eagles, and captain of the Lions Rugby Club is the youngest player in the Ghana league.

The Cape Coast University student participated in all international matches played by Ghana and crowned the year by leading the Ghana Rugby Women’s Sevens national team, Ghana Eagles winning the Rugby Africa Women’s Challenge Trophy 2019 in Monastir-Tunisia.

Anita Halm is awarded a special athlete because she plays rugby and taekwondo, combining with higher education.

His male counterpart and Ghana Eagles captain Alex Dorpenyo beat stiff competition to become the 2019 SWAG Rugby Player of the Year.

Alex playing for Conquerors SC was instrumental in Ghana’s participation in the rugby qualifiers for the Olympics and the Africa Rugby Sevens Championship.

Alex led Ghana to win the Ghana Rugby Eagles men’s sevens team to win the 2019 Africa Rugby Men’s Seven Trophy in Brakpan-South Africa.

The 45th edition of the SWAG MTN Awards will be held at the Splash Alisa Hotel on Saturday, October 10, with the Chief Justice honoring the event.

The SWAG Awards, the longest running awards program in Ghana, rewards top performers throughout the year and recognizes the efforts of people involved in developing the sport.
