The president of the Christian Council of Ghana, Reverend Dr. Paul K. Boafo, says Martin Amidu’s resignation as special counsel came as a shock to him.
Speaking on Joy News’ AM Show on Friday, the president alluded to the fact that the lack of a corporation between the government and the Special Counsel contributed greatly to his resignation.
“For him, suddenly submitting his resignation was a shock, and I thought something should have been done to prevent it,” he said.
He noted that Mr. Amidu is recognized for his credibility and fierce anti-corruption stance, as such, “if he couldn’t do it, then it’s a failure on our part.”
According to him, the failure of the government to retain Martin Amidu as a special prosecutor is indicative that Ghana has lost the fight against corruption.
“That we have someone in charge of an institution who comes out and says ‘I resign’, it means that we are defeated ”, emphasized Rev Boafo.
The former Attorney General during an interview on Citi FM indicated that so far he has received various forms of threats after his resignation.
Reverend Boafo, however, pointed out that “these are the impediments that come and these are part of the corruption.”
“Fighting corruption in all spheres, everywhere is swimming against the current, it is not so simple and it is not so easy for you to say that you will do it without problems,” he said.
The Special Prosecutor resigned from his position on November 16, 2020, 3 years after he was appointed by President Akufo-Addo.
In his resignation letter, he stated that “The events of November 12, 2020 removed me from the only protection I had from the threats and plans directed at me to carry out the anti-corruption evaluation report of Agyapa Royalties Limited Transactions and dictates that I resign as Specialist Prosecutor immediately “.
